＂Island in Between,＂ a documentary by Taiwanese American director S. Leo Chiang, has been nominated for Best Documentary Short Film at the 96th Academy Awards. The film provides an outsider’s perspective on the everyday life of the Kinmen Islands, exploring the complex relationship between Taiwan, Kinmen, and China through the lens of Chiang’s father’s military service memories. Chiang, who was born in Taiwan and raised in the U.S., aims to offer a unique perspective on the Taiwan Strait crisis by sharing the experiences of the people living in the region. The winners of the 96th Academy Awards will be announced on March 10.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued a heavy rain advisory for Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Keelung City in Taiwan, warning of potential intensive downpours throughout the evening. The northeast monsoon is causing localized heavy rainfall in coastal areas of Keelung and mountainous regions of Taipei. The strengthening of the northeast monsoon has also prompted alerts for strong gusts ranging from force 9 to 11, potentially affecting areas from Taoyuan City to Tainan City, as well as southeastern parts of the island, including Orchid Island, Green Island, and the Hengchun Peninsula. The advisory for strong winds covers an expansive area, including Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan City, the Hengchun Peninsula, Taitung County, Orchid Island, Green Island, Penghu County, and the Kinmen and Matsu region. These strong wind conditions are expected to last from the early morning of Wednesday (Dec. 20) through the evening of Friday (Dec. 22).

A stalled front from Zhejiang, China, and extending west to Sichuan, China, is approaching Taiwan, potentially bringing cooler weather to the northern and northeastern regions. Local sporadic showers are expected in Kinmen Matsu regions, with the possibility of local heavy rain estimated for the Keelung North Coast and northeastern mountain regions. Along with Penghu, central and southern regions of Taiwan are expected to continue to experience mostly cloudy to clear weather, with the possibility of afternoon showers in the mountains.
